COLLECTED UPADESHA TEACHINGS ON RUSHEN OF BODY, VOICE, AND MIND

In order for an authentic state of contemplation to arise in the practitioner, it is indispensable to separate or distinguish the mind from the state of pure instant presence (rigpa). In general the methods having this aim are called Khorde Rushen (separation of samsara and nirvana).

The present book aims to collect and collate, in a single container, the teachings on Rushen of body, voice, and mind spread over a period ranging from 1982 to 2018. The various groups of Rushen connected to each of the three doors of body, voice and mind have been divided by tradition and origin into four chapters.

The first series of Rushen belongs to the Nyingthig of Vimalamitra. The second series of Rushen belongs to the Longsal Nyingthig and is based on the upadeshas of Guru Padmasambhava. The third and fourth series of Rushen consist of two different upadesha instructions belonging to the cycle of the Longsal, the terma teachings rediscovered by Chogyal Namkhai Norbu.

This collection of Rushen teachings is very useful for those who intend to apply the different methods on the base of first-hand instructions belonging to the Upadesha transmitted by Chogyal Namkhai Norbu.

Many methods of the Dzogchen Upadesha derive from the tantra Dra Thalgyur, which is not easy to understand. Often no written explanations of the text exist, particularly for the Upadesha, which is a teaching mainly linked to oral transmission, as usually occurs with secret teachings. The fact is that in order to understand these things it is necessary to have received direct transmission from a master who knows the principle of the teaching and who in turn received transmission and instruction for the practice from another master. This is the right way to maintain and transmit teachings.

Chogyal Namkhai Norbu

With your body and mind relaxed, without being distracted by anything else, reflect in this way: all existence and all the variety of causes and results of the infinite and diverse good and bad things of samsara and nirvana arising from individual causes and conditions gathering adventitiously, and their relationship of interdependence, however they appear, are created or conceived by the mind. Apart from that, in reality they do not have the slightest existence. Also, the mind itself is a concept created by the mind, and apart from that, it is devoid of any reality.
